What is Academic Forgiveness?
Academic Forgiveness is a mechanism for undergraduate students to overcome poor prior academic performance when returning to Temple University after a minimum of three consecutive years (or two years if having completed at least 15 transferable credits elsewhere with a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better). Students electing Academic Forgiveness must choose the option before the end of the drop/add period of the first term following their absence. All Academic Forgiveness petitions will be held for processing after the drop/add deadline for the returning term and will only be approved for students who are registered for term at that time.
How do I initiate an Academic Forgiveness petition?
You may contact the Academic Advising office in your school or college for assistance with reenrollment and Academic Forgiveness. An academic advisor will discuss the implications of Academic Forgiveness and other important program requirements.
What happens if my petition is successful?
Upon a successful petition:
- Your cumulative GPA will reset to 0.00.
- All prior courses and grades will remain on your academic record and transcript.
- The notation of "Academic Forgiveness" will be recorded on your official transcript.
- Credit will be considered for courses with grades of A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C- and CR. Temple University courses with previously earned grades of D+, D, D-, F and NC will not be used for credit. The school/college has final approval of credits that will count towards graduation, and may disallow credits towards graduation for some older courses.
Once approved for Academic Forgiveness, your petition cannot be reversed. You will be afforded only one opportunity for Academic Forgiveness.
Who should I contact for assistance?
